Flax Bedding: The New Gold Standard for Equine Health and Stable Sustainability

What leading equine researchers now say about the safest, most sustainable bedding material for your stable.

A recent peer-reviewed study published by MDPI – Animals Journal (2025) provides the most comprehensive review to date of the effects of different equine bedding materials on horses, stable workers, and the environment. The full article — A Literature Review on Equine Bedding: Impacts on Horse and Human Welfare, Health, and the Environment — examined 77 scientific papers to identify the strengths and drawbacks of each bedding material used in modern horse management.

Key Findings from the Review

According to the research, traditional materials like straw and wood shavings remain the most widely used — but they also present significant challenges. Straw, while comfortable and natural, can contribute to respiratory irritation, mold exposure, and even colic when ingested in excess. Wood shavings, on the other hand, vary greatly in quality; only de-dusted and dehydrated shavings provide the desired benefits for horse and human health.

Interestingly, the review highlights newer materials such as flax as some of the most promising solutions for modern equine facilities.

“Flax bedding is highly absorbent, dust- and pest-free, and provides better hoof protection than straw,” the authors conclude. “It is also environmentally friendly and fully compostable.”

Why Flax Bedding Outperforms Traditional Options

Flax, made from the inner shive of the flax plant, has several advantages that directly address the concerns raised in the study:

  • Superior absorption: keeps stalls dry and reduces ammonia levels.

  • Dust-free environment: supports optimal respiratory health for both horses and caretakers.

  • Comfort and safety: provides a soft, stable surface that promotes natural resting behavior.

  • Eco-friendly lifecycle: fully compostable with a neutral pH — transforming used bedding into valuable soil material rather than landfill waste.

These findings align closely with the mission of EQuiCIBUS, whose flax-based bedding products are designed to enhance equine comfort, improve air quality, and close the loop in sustainable stable management.

One Welfare in Practice

The study also underlines the concept of One Welfare — the interconnectedness between animal well-being, human welfare, and environmental sustainability. Choosing the right bedding material is therefore not only a matter of stable comfort, but an ethical and ecological decision.

In this context, flax bedding offers a balance that benefits horses, stable workers, and the planet.
